Everything you need to know before your child starts.
Getting Started
Still deciding? Answers to the questions parents ask most before signing up — from zero-basis concerns to picking the right starting point.
Yes, total beginners are the most common starting point at GoEast Kids. Our beginner pathway starts with comprehension and simple expressions, guiding children to speak naturally through stories and real-life scenarios. Most children start producing fuller sentences within 1-2 months of consistent lessons.
Yes, GoEast Kids trial lesson is completely free. After the trial, a language consultant will walk you through suitable program options and schedule so you can make an informed decision.
After you sign up online, GoEast Kids’ language consultant will match a teacher based on your child’s age and Chinese level, then schedule a 25-minute online trial lesson. Booking confirmation usually comes within 2 business days.
Don’t worry about how well your child performs. We suggests parents watch for two things: whether the child shows interest in the content, and whether they can gradually follow along. It’s completely normal for kids to lose focus in their first lesson, just let them know beforehand that it’s okay to participate at their own pace.
Most children begin to understand and try simple words and short phrases within 1–4 weeks. After 1–2 months of consistent lessons, they can produce fuller sentences and start using Chinese on their own in familiar situations. Every child’s pace is different, but consistent learning always leads to clear progress.
GoEast Kids trial lesson itself serves as an assessment. If your child already has some Chinese background, our language consultant will first provide a simple reference to help you gauge their level. A teacher will then meet with your child online to evaluate their listening, speaking, and character recognition skills, along with how they respond in class, and match an appropriate trial lesson. After the trial, the teacher will recommend the best course level and learning path based on your child’s actual performance.
Yes. GoEast Kids courses are designed without relying on a Chinese-speaking home environment. The pace may be slightly slower compared to children who hear Chinese at home, but we’ll match the right course to your child so they can get started comfortably and build a sense of achievement. We also provide after-class exercises and parent guides to help your child make steady progress outside of lessons.
In addition to regular one-on-one online lessons, GoEast Kids runs in-person Chinese camps in Shanghai every winter and summer break. These are open to students aged 9–17 and offer 1–4 weeks of immersive Chinese learning, including language classes and cultural activities. See our [Camps page] for details.
Scheduling & Logistics
Lesson length, frequency, pricing, and how to switch things up if needed.
GoEast Kids offers two formats based on age: for children aged 3–5, we recommend 25-minute lessons, 2–3 times per week; for ages 6 and up, 50-minute lessons, 1–2 times per week. Keeping a consistent schedule is important, it helps children build a routine and makes it easier to stick with learning long-term. Your language consultant can help you find a schedule that works with your family’s routine.
All GoEast Kids lessons are live, one-on-one sessions. Every lesson is recorded for review purposes, but recordings can’t replace real-time interaction, so we don’t recommend relying on replays.
You can switch teachers at any time, free of charge, with no strings attached. We’ll brief the new teacher on your child’s progress so the transition is smooth. Some initial awkwardness is normal, it usually improves noticeably by the second or third class.
For younger children, we recommend some parental involvement to help build learning habits. As children gain confidence, they can gradually learn independently. GoEast Kids provides learning feedback and after-class review guides, so parents don’t need to prepare any teaching materials. After the trial lesson, the teacher will give more specific guidance on how much involvement works best for your child.
GoEast Kids uses lesson-package pricing, with different options based on the number of lessons and payment method. For detailed pricing, please visit our [programs page] or book a free consultation. Your language consultant will recommend the best plan for you.
Teaching Approach
How our teachers help kids speak up, stay focused, and actually enjoy learning Chinese.
GoEast Kids doesn’t just follow a textbook page by page. Teachers dynamically adjust the pace based on each child’s performance, building more interaction and targeted practice around the lesson’s key language points. This helps children truly understand through repeated use and gradually move toward independent expression.
GoEast Kids lessons are conducted primarily in Chinese, typically 60%–80% during regular sessions. In trial lessons and the early stages, teachers use more English to help children understand, stay engaged, and feel comfortable. As children adapt, the proportion of Chinese increases steadily, so they learn to understand and use Chinese in real contexts while staying relaxed and confident.
This is very common. GoEast Kids teachers use stories, interactive activities, and gentle prompting to help children transition from “repeating after the teacher” to “speaking on their own.” Most children start opening up once they’re comfortable in class. You’ll typically see a noticeable change after 2–4 lessons.
GoEast Kids teachers keep children engaged through stories and interactive tasks, adjusting the pace flexibly. It’s completely normal for kids to need a few sessions to settle in, most are fully engaged within 2–3 classes.
Many children go through a stage of understanding without actively producing — this is a normal part of language learning. GoEast Kids teachers use story-based interaction, situational Q&A, and everyday conversation to help children gradually build the habit and confidence to express themselves in familiar contexts. As their language skills accumulate and with consistent classroom practice and support at home, most children begin using Chinese more naturally in daily life.
All GoEast Kids teachers are fluent in English. In the early stages, teachers use English as needed to help children understand lesson content and feel safe. As your child’s vocabulary and comfort level grow, the proportion of English decreases. Most children smoothly transition to a predominantly Chinese classroom and participate actively.
It’s a common worry, but characters don’t have to be overwhelming. We start with recognition, not writing. Younger children pick up characters naturally through picture books, stories, and classroom interaction. Once they have a solid foundation, GoEast Kids introduces writing step by step through games and interactive practice — no rote copying.
Learning Support
Progress tracking, exam prep, and how GoEast Kids fits alongside other learning.
The child’s progress is assessed through listening, speaking, reading, and writing assessments, class participation, and homework. We provide a monthly learning report. Parents can clearly see what their child can understand and express, and the reports also help teachers adjust their approach in a timely way.
We provides exercises and parent guides that match the classroom pace, showing you exactly how to help your child review each week. It’s simple and straightforward. No extra lesson prep needed.
Yes, GoEast Kids has purpose-built exam prep courses for YCT, HSK, and AP Chinese. You can let us know your needs before enrollment. We’ll run an initial assessment, then arrange the appropriate course content, lesson hours, and teacher to help your child prepare systematically.
Yes, they complement each other well. GoEast Kids one-on-one lessons are highly targeted, focusing on improving listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills at an individualized pace. Weekend Chinese schools offer a group learning environment and social practice. The more often a child engages with Chinese, the faster they progress — many families use both together to give their child a well-rounded Chinese education.
