Our Story

Before GoEast, the three of us taught Chinese at universities and coached executives at multinational companies. The longer we taught, the more we believed: learning Chinese as an adult could be so much more flexible and efficient. In 2012 we started GoEast, beginning with in-person classes in Shanghai. In 2017 we launched our online school and brought those classes to adult learners around the world.

Then some of our students became parents—and started asking: could you teach my child, too? Especially families who had lived in Shanghai and moved back to their home countries. They didn’t want their children to lose the Chinese they’d already picked up, but finding good teachers locally was nearly impossible. So in 2018, we started teaching our students’ kids online. We never really promoted it. The number of children learning with us just kept growing.

We always knew that children and adults learn differently. A great adult teacher isn’t necessarily a great children’s teacher. And most textbooks on the market were too academic, not engaging enough to get kids to actually open their mouths and speak. Meanwhile, our own team was growing up too: the young people who started GoEast were building families of their own—many of them cross-cultural—and their own children were arriving at that same crossroads of “time to learn Chinese.”

So in 2021, we formed a team built specifically for kids. We developed our own curriculum. We trained teachers specifically for young learners.

GoEast Kids officially launched in 2021, but it had been growing organically since 2018. It’s made up of people who are both educators and parents. And every course we design was first created for the “GoEast second generation”—our own children.

Now, we’d like to put that same curriculum in your child’s hands.

What We Believe

Children Are Not Small Adults

That’s why we train teachers who specialize in teaching kids, with methods and energy designed for young learners.

Curriculum built to get kids talking

We develop our own courses, and the most important goal is: getting children to open their mouths and speak.

Designed to the standard we set for our own kids

Before any course reaches your child, it has to pass one test: would we use it to teach ours?

Built for real children

Before GoEast Kids even existed, we had taught hundreds of children with off-the-shelf textbooks—so we know exactly what they need.

Meet Us

Emily Wang, GoEast Kids founder

Emily Wang

Emily studied Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language at Beijing Foreign Studies University and holds a master’s in Comparative Literature from Fudan University. She began teaching Chinese to adults in 2007 and in 2018 turned her focus to how children acquire a second language — the work that became the seed of GoEast Kids. As a mother in a cross-cultural family raising bilingual children, what it takes for a child to grow up at ease across languages isn’t just something she studies — it’s something she lives every day.

Coffia Duan(段晓晖), GoEast Kids school manager

Coffia Duan

Coffia has been focused on K12 Chinese education since 2015. Her guiding principle: don’t try too hard to “teach” — guide instead, and let children find their own way into the language. She leads the full GoEast Kids learning experience, from curriculum design to after-class practice, matching every child with a path that fits their pace. She’s also mom to a 12-year-old boy, so staying the course with a child over years isn’t just her method, it’s her life.

Bella Jin 金所静, GoEast Kids teaching supervisor

Bella Jin

Bella studied Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language and has over 10,000 hours of classroom experience. At GoEast, she has walked many children through the full journey from zero to confident speaker. Her standard for a good class is simple: it’s not about finishing the lesson, it’s about the child actually learning, and enjoying speaking Chinese. As Teaching Supervisor, she sits in on classes, watches how each child responds, and works with teachers lesson by lesson to make sure every class is truly taught for the child in it.

Lynn Ji (季玲), GoEast Kids language consultant leader

Lynn Ji

Lynn holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language and has spent years in second-language education and international student counseling. She joined GoEast over eight years ago and now leads the consultant team, helping families around the world find the right Chinese learning path for their children. As a bilingual mom herself, she’s heard every question because she’s asked them too.

Meet Qiqi 奇奇

Qiqi is the GoEast Kids mascot — a baby Qilin. The Qilin is a mythical creature from Chinese mythology, said to appear at the birth of someone truly extraordinary. That’s why Chinese families call their most amazing children “Qilin kids.” We hope every GoEast Kids learner becomes a “Qilin kid” in their parents’ eyes. Qiqi joins children throughout their learning journey, cheering them on in class, during practice, and with every step forward.

GoEast Kids is the children’s Chinese education brand under GoEast Mandarin. Founded in 2012, GoEast Mandarin has grown from an in-person school in Shanghai to a global online classroom, serving over 20,000 learners with a renewal rate above 90% and a 4.8 Trustpilot rating.

Building on more than a decade of Chinese teaching experience, we redesigned the learning path for children aged 3–17: classes paced for the way kids actually focus, richer interactive experiences, and Chinese teachers who truly understand children.
